Book Review: The Iron Daughter by Julie Kagawa

The Iron DaughterHalf Summer faery princess, half human, Meghan has never fit in anywhere. Deserted by the Winter prince she thought loved her, she is prisoner to the Winter faery queen. As war looms between Summer and Winter, Meghan knows that the real danger comes from the Iron fey—ironbound faeries that only she and her absent prince have seen. But no one believes her.
Worse, Meghan's own fey powers have been cut off. She's stuck in Faery with only her wits for help. Trusting anyone would be foolish. Trusting a seeming traitor could be deadly. But even as she grows a backbone of iron, Meghan can't help but hear the whispers of longing in her all-too-human heart. - From Goodreads.com

The Iron Daughter is the second book in The Iron Fey series by Julie Kagawa. It's one of my favourite series, and it's awesome.

Meghan is a faery princess who is half human. She's being held by Queen Mab, the queen of the Unseelie court, and happens to be in love with her son, Ash. But, the problem is, she's a Summer princess, daughter of King Oberon of the Seelie court. Summer and Winter share a lot of things, but love isn't one of them. Now, Meghan must get over her feelings for the icy prince Ash, and do what she has to do to get back the Scepter of the Seasons, which has been stolen from Queen Mab by the Iron fey. She may be the only one who can get it back. But can she retrieve it and return it before war breaks out between the two courts?
There are so many things about this series that I love. I love the characters, and I love the writing style. It's descriptive and interesting, and it's super detailed, so the whole book plays out like movie in your head. I could clearly imagine how it would look in my head, something that I don't always find easy to do.

The characters really drive the story for me though. They are so strong, and believable, and they are very well written. The main character, Meghan, is not perfect, which I love. I have a problem with characters in books who are perfect, and always make the right decisions instantly, without feeling or thought. Meghan makes mistakes, and she knows it, but she always manages to put things right, and she's just an awesome character.

Speaking of awesome characters, then we'll come on to Ash and Puck. I'm Team Puck, always have been, always will. I love him, more than Ash, because he's fun and charming, rather than brooding and mysterious like Ash. They both love Meghan and would do anything for her, but I am always wanting her to realise that she loves Puck more.... After all, he has been there for her her whole life. Anyway, enough about characters.

The main plot was well thought out, and very engaging. I felt that I was following Meghan and her friends through the Tir Na Nog, and through the Briars and the wyldwood, and even while they were in the mortal world, I felt like I was there. The writing is easy to read and once you start reading, you can't stop. It's amazing.

I really love this series, and I really recommend it to everyone. I have no complaints about it, none at all. All I can say is, if you haven't read the series, go out and buy a copy of The Iron King as soon as you can, as you will not be disappointed!

I give it 5 Feet!

  3. I had high expectations for this book even before I started reading it due to its brilliant debut. I wasn't the least bit disappointed with The Iron Daughter. It was as good as The Iron King, if not better. They story has a powerful and thrilling plot which brings readers on a journey to retrieve the Scepter of Seasons which was stolen by a new kind of Faery called The Iron Fey.
